Appreciation of poem Nose versus eyes class 11th
1. About the poem, poet and title
The poet William Cowper is famous for his satirical work. The poem 'Nose versus Eyes' is such a one gently humorous poem. It pokes fun at some absurd decisions arrived at in jurisprudence when the law is applied without human discretion and thought. The nose and eyes are sensory organs that symbolise human behaviour.
2. Theme
The theme is about typical human behavior in the society which is greedy. People who grab something which is not theirs and depride those who deserve it.
3. Poetic style, language and poetic device
The poem is in stanzas of four lines each, The first and third, and the second and fourth lines rhyme in each.
The sensory organs are personified. The eyes and nose are the parties fighting the cakes, claiming ownership of the spectacles. The tongue is the lawyer ; the ear is the chief baron – The judge. The tongue is attributed with the qualities of skillful argument and learning. The tongue is also given the quality of shifting loyalties and double speak. That is what lawyers do. The ear is spoken of as having good judgement.
The poem has many words and phrases related to the legal field ‘Your lordship' is how the tongue addresses the ear. ‘Decreed, pleaded, arguments ‘are the few words used in the court.

4. Special features
The poem is unique, in that, it is a gentle criticism of the judicial system. Criticism of the judiciary is dangerous and could even land one into trouble.
But the poet has been gently mocking in his style, which does not offend but is completely truthful how the things are being presented.
5. Message / values/ morals in the poem.
The message the poem gives is that the judges verdict should also keep in mind the human values are not just arrived at decisions based purely on law books.
6. Your opinion about the poem.

The poem reminds us about one of the hypocrisy and greed in people to grab what isn't theirs. It shows how the weak are unable to defend themselves. Though they are on the side of right. They are often wrong – the nose trying to grab the spectacles when the weak eyes need them to stand on is the perfect example in the poem 'nose versus eyes'.

Poem

Between Nose and Eyes a strange contest arose, -

The spectacles set them unhappily wrong;

The point in dispute was, as all the world knows,

To which the said spectacles ought to belong.

So Tongue was the lawyer, and argued the cause

With great deal of skill, and a wig full of learning;

While Chief Baron Ear sat to balance the laws,

So famed for his talent in nicely discerning.

'In behalf of the Nose it will quickly appear,

And your lordship,' he said, 'will undoubtedly find,

That the Nose has had spectacles always in wear,

Which amounts to possession time out of mind.'

Then holding the spectacles up to the court,

'Your lordship observes they are made with a straddle

As wide as the ridge of the Nose is; in short,

Designed to sit close to it, just like a saddle.

'Again would your lordship a moment suppose,

('Tis a case that has happened, and may be again)

That the visage or countenance had not a Nose,

Pray who would, or who could, wear spectacles then?

'On the whole it appears, and my argument shows,

With a reasoning the court will never condemn,

That the spectacles plainly were made for the Nose,

And the Nose was as plainly intended for them.'

Then shifting his side, as a lawyer knows how,

He pleaded again in behalf of the Eyes:

But what were his arguments few people know,

For the court did not think they were equally wise,

So his lordship decreed with a grave

This is a poem by William cowper .It is a poem on an interesting subjects .There is the dispute between nose a nd eyes .It is about the spectacles .Each one claims that the spectacles belongs to it .The eyes use the spectacles to see things .The nose holds the spectacles and keeps them in place.
Points of law are raised .The thing belongs to one in whose possession it is . so the spectacles to the nose .These is no face without nose. If there had been no nose , there would have been no spectacles .The judgement is as interesting as the argument.
Summary
A dispute between nose and eyes .the points of contention was if the spectacles belong to nose or eyes .The tongue took up the role of the lawyer .It argued the case with a professional skill. It gave learned references of law to support its point.Chief Baron Ear sat in the court to settle the question of law. He was famous for his analytical mind intelligent judgment .
The argument began in favour of the nose .Addressing the judge , the judge lawyer argued that the Nose always has spectacles to wear .This meant he was always in possession of those spectacles .He was the possessor and therefore ,the spectacles belonges to him .Then it had a straddle as wide as the ridge of the Nose .It was designed to rest on the nose as perfectly as a saddle was on a horse .This again proved that the spectacles belonged to the Nose.
Another argument was even more interesting .The lawyer drew the attention of the judge to the fact that every face had a nose .There never was a face without nose. Suppose for the sake of argument, that there was such a face .Then he could wear a spectacles? The lawyer pleaded that his reasoning would be accepted by the court .HE concluded that the spectacles were plainly made for the nose and nose was meant for the spectacles.
The same lawyer then shifted his side .Now he began to argue in favour of the eyes .He argued in the best possible way he could .But none knew what his arguments were .The court remained unconvinced .The arguments in the favour of eyes were not as convincing as they were in the favor of nose.So his lordship gave nose put his spectacles on,by daylight or candle –light .

Question: Discuss the writer’s concerns and poetic methods in the following poem:

Poem: Composed upon Westminster Bridge

Poet: William Wordsworth

William Wordsworth had a variety of concerns which he expressed in “Composed Upon Westminster Bridge.” He was a metaphysical poet and the theme he writes about in this poem is nature and its relationship to man. He has used a variety of poetic methods which have all helped to shape and enhance the poem such as rhyming couplets, simile, and personification. The main concerns he highlights in this poem are the destructive nature of man, the relationship of man and nature, and the negative impact of industrialization on nature.

Wordsworth made use of similes as one of his poetic methods. In line four of the poem he writes: “This city doth like a garment wear…” Here he compares the city to a garment as according to him figuratively the city wears the beauty of the morning. He uses this poetic method to highlight the extent to which the city exudes beauty in the early hours of the morning while all is silent and the industrial excesses of the day have not yet begun. Wordsworth in presenting the beauty and tranquility of the morning could be highlighting the negativity that pervades when morning leaves because of man’s intervention. This is all too likely as the area that Wordsworth probes in this poem is the relationship of man and nature and he clearly highlights the negative aspects of this relationship.

Wordsworth also utilizes rhyming couplets, in particular end rhymes. This is demonstrated in the following lines of the poem : “This city now doth like a garment The Beauty of the morning;silent, bare” and also in : “Ships, towers, domes, theatres and temples lie open unto the fields , and to the sky;” This has quite an interesting effect as rhythm is described as a poem’s “sound system” and through the poet’s crafty manipulation of the rhymes he is able to give the poem a particular rhythm which enhances its style, value and meaning and draws attention to what it projects. It is portrayed almost like a song and helps to create visual images like a painting and Wordsworth can be likened to a painter in this way. This is Wordsworth’s literary skill at work and this contributes to the reader’s understanding of his status in literature as one of the better if not the best metaphysical poets known to man.

Wordsworth also employs the use of personification. He says: “The river glideth at his own sweet will : Dear God! The very houses seem asleep;” The reader cannot help noticing the way in which this poet personifies the river and houses describing them as if they are alive and well and capable of exhibiting human capabilities , that of gliding gracefully and of sleeping as if tired. All of this combined with the poet’s extensive use of nature imagery help to bring the subject Wordsworth writes about to life as well increasing its significance.

One of Wordsworth’s main concerns in Composed Upon Westminster Bridge” is the destructive nature of man. Wordsworth presents a vision of nature in the early hours of the morning when man has not yet begun to intervene. He presents its beauty and transcendent nature but he does not stop there. He opens with a line praising the beauty of nature: “Earth has not anything to show more fair:” but closes on a sad note: “ And all that mighty is lying still!” His comment is that man’s nature is destructive and due to the effect of man on nature stillness and dullness has been the result. Smoke , dust and noise have become the grim characteristics of nature due to industrialization, and the only time a “smokeless air,” a beautiful atmosphere can be enjoyed is in the tranquility of the morning before industrialization continues.

The negative impact of industrialization on nature is one of the poet’s concerns in the poem. In man’s lustful aggrandizing efforts to make progress through industrializa
